The Prothero counselling service has been running for more than 30 years. We have a team of volunteer counsellors who are qualified or completing recognised professional qualifications who work to a high standard in accordance with BACP guidelines. We have daytime and some evening appointments. Our clients can come as individuals or couples.

Counselling

Counselling provides an opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings about whatever is troubling you. The counsellors role is not to give advice or make judgements; their task is to provide safe and accepting conditions in which they can help you to help yourself.

You don’t have to be in crisis to seek counselling. People come because they may be:

  • Unhappy, lonely, anxious or depressed.
  • Want to relate more easily to others
  • Worried by tensions and anxiety within their relationships, family or workplace

Through counselling many people are able to change and learn how to live more satisfactorily with things they are not able to change.

Couples

Our experience has shown the effectiveness of counselling in helping to resolve relationship difficulties. Where possible these difficulties may be worked through with a counsellor and couples helped to develop insight and skills to improve communication, break unhelpful patterns of behaviours, and address sources of misunderstanding and conflict, to strengthen their relationships.

Where breakdown is unavoidable, we seek to defuse the stress, instability and conflict, by providing clients with an accepting and supportive environment in which better understanding and communication may be achieved.

Individuals

The counsellors see individual clients who want to work on relationship issues or other specific difficulties such as bereavement, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, abuse or domestic violence, to mention but a few.

Working with a counsellor can build confidence, help people to make sense of their problems and enable them to find better ways of dealing with their difficulties and relationships.

Confidentialty & Feedback

It is particularly important to know we give respect and confidentially high priority in our work.

Feedback from our clients is very important to us.

I can only thank everyone involved from the bottom of my heart for all you have helped me with

I do not think I would be here any more without the help and support of my counsellor who was wonderful

Counselling has provided me with the tools to grow and move forward

Counselling helped me to take control back of my life

Counselling saved my relationship.  We don’t argue so the whole family is happier
